33 RESTAURATION OF THE CHAPEL OF ST. LUCIA

Boutersem

The St Lucia chapel was created in 1796 and built on a well. It is located near the church, in the natural area of Snoekengracht, on the left bank of the river Velpe, on the spot called ‘Sint-Luciebeemd’ [St Lucia meadow]. This well is one of the numerous ‘miraculous’ wells in the region, which were being worshipped in the pre-Christian era. The later worship of St Lucia would result from this ancient custom.

The chapel is not a protected monument, but is particularly valuable for the rural heritage. The municipal administration launched this project in order to renovate the chapel. A halting and pick nick place will also be provided. Making the chapel accessible to a broad public is also part of the project. Boutersem foresees the development of 12 local walking tours; one of these will be devoted to the historic sites related to the St Lucia devotion and the chapel.
