48 OPENING UP GRAZEN CRASH SITE FOR TOURISM WITH PILOTS ROUTE

Geetbets

Various aircraft crashed in Groot Geetbets during the Second World War. These crashes are engraved in the population’s collective memory, and form part of the World War heritage. The municipality of Geetbets wants to open up access to this heritage with a pilot’s route. In its third submunicipality it would also like to set up a monument to the crashes in the village of Grazen in the form of an engine mounted on a cast-iron plinth in the village square.
The engine weighs 800 kilos and measures 1.7 metres by 1.5 metres. There will be an information panel – as also at the other crash sites – on which the historical background to this engine and the crash is explained. The four crash sites will also be connected together by a 20 km cultural-historical ‘pilot’s route’ for cyclists.
