53 SUSTAINABLE AND INNOVATIVE FRUIT-PROCESSING IN THE HAGELAND Hageland+
The Steunpunt Hoeveproducten (Farm Produce Support Centre) has been active for many years in the Hageland. Among other things, it supports fruit businesses as they start and expand their activities.
As in other sectors, professionalisation is essential here. It has been made necessary firstly by competition and secondly – and above all – by increasingly tight regulations on food security, planning, labelling, self-inspection, traceability, VAT and other matters.
Fruit growers also need to handle their product innovatively and give thought to ways in which they might give it added value.
The ultimate goal of the project is to give the Hageland’s fruit growers the possibility of creating added value for their products in a professional manner and of being less dependent on regular marketing channels (spreading risk).
