85 VILLAGE EXPERIENCE KERSBEEK: RENOVATION SERVAAS HALL IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE

Kortenaken

The vast rural municipality of Kortenaken has to deal with a number of major challenges: loneliness, social poverty, outdated public facilities, vacant premises and CO2 emissions. The municipality of Kortenaken wants to meet these challenges by promoting the village experience in the Kersbeek sub-municipality in two ways. Firstly, by creating an outdoor recreational site (a subsidy has been requested for this). The municipality will provide facilities at this site where associations and citizens can meet, play sports, exercise and relax (see other application for subsidy submitted at the same time). And secondly the renovation of the existing “Zaal Servaas” (Servaas Hall) in the community centre, located in the centre of Kersbeek and that is rented on a long lease. The municipal council’s objective here is to actively encourage indoor club life and neighbourhood initiatives. The sustainable renovation work is designed to increase the importance of the Servaas Hall as a meeting place for residents, associations and the school opposite.
