The project aims to refresh and modernise the shelter and meeting house BEKAF and involve the neighbourhood in their operation.
The reception house at Bekaf in Aarschot offers temporary shelter to about 12 people with a migration background. Various activities are also organised in this house, such as Dutch and conversation classes, handicraft classes, training for volunteers and holiday classes for children. There is also a library where books on migration and learning materials for learning Dutch can be borrowed.
From 2024, drop-in moments will be organised: neighbours and sympathisers from the city of Aarschot will have the opportunity to come into contact with the shelter's residents. These encounters are an important pillar for the project's brand awareness and offer locals a broader perspective on their new fellow citizens. An open day is planned for this purpose in summer 2024 and may be repeated in the future.
The shelter urgently needs refurbishment and the replacement of some windows. These improvements are necessary to ensure its future-proofing and sustainable reception function for both the neighbourhood and the newcomers.
