68 VOICES OF HAKENDOVER, A VILLAGE TELLS ITS STORY
Tienen
The centuries-old Horse Procession of Hakendover, recognised as Flemish cultural heritage since 2022 and attracting 20,000 to 25,000 visitors annually, is the beating heart of the village. The project “Voices of Hakendover, a village tells its story” collects stories and memories from residents and associations, which are turned into nine multilingual audio stories along a 3 to 5 km walking route.
The strength of the project lies in participation: residents contribute stories, take part in interviews and co-creation sessions, and test the route and stories in feedback sessions. Together with Regionaal Landschap Zuid-Hageland, the route is being enhanced with rest areas and small plantings, so that heritage experience and nature reinforce each other. The result will be made accessible via QR codes, a walking brochure and digital apps. It will be launched in the run-up to the Horse Procession of 29 March 2027, thereby ensuring the sustainability of the heritage and strengthening the socio-cultural fabric and tourist offer of Hakendover.
